The Broadway revival of "The Sound of Music" will make its Indianapolis premiere at Clowes Hall for a limited one-week engagement Oct. 12-17. "The Sound of Music" returned to Broadway for the first time in nearly 40 years since its premiere in 1959. In 1998, the production was a Tony nominee for Best Revival of a Musical. Set in Salzburg, Austria in the late 1930s, "The Sound of Music," is the true story of the postulant Maria Rainer. She proves too high-spirited for religious life, and is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of the widowed naval Captain Georg von Trapp.
Rainer's growing rapport with the von Trapp children, coupled with her generosity and spirit, gradually captures the heart of von Trapp, and they are soon married. Upon returning from their honeymoon, they discover the Nazis have invaded Austria, and have demanded the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The finale illustrates the family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland and freedom. Richard Chamberlain, two-time Golden Globe Award Winner, stars as the heroic Captain Georg von Trapp. Meg Tolin stars in the performance as Maria Rainer. In addition to the well-known Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II songs, "Do-Re-Mi," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Edelweiss," this stage production features two songs written by Rodgers for the film version. Two songs from the original score not featured in the film are also included in the production. Also hitting the Clowes stage soon is the Indianapolis Opera, which will open its 24th season with Giacomo Puccini's tragedy, "Tosca." Performances are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m. "Tosca" is a devastating tale of power and passion, of betrayal and revenge. Tosca, Rome's celebrated diva, is drawn into a web of sexual and political intrigue by the sinister chief of police, Scarpia. Her unwavering devotion to an artist suspected of political dissent leads to her demise. The production will also feature the Indianapolis Opera Chorus. |
