| Richard Chamberlain narrates ‘The Astronomers’,
a six-part series that explores the lives and works of scientists around
the globe who are revolutionizing our knowledge of the universe.
The series goes to the farthest reaches of the universe in search of black holes, quasars, dark matter, gravity waves, stars and evidence of planets outside our solar system. These celestial phenomena are explored through the perspectives of the men and women all over the world whose jobs render them responsible for uncovering the secrets of the cosmos. The Astronomers takes an uniquely humanizing approach to science programming, focusing not only on the professional achievements of the scientists, but on their personal lives as well. |

| Where is the rest of the universe?
The question is critical to astronomers, as they are unable to account for nearly 90 percent of the inverse’s mass. Two of the prominent scientists devoted to research in the area of this unseen of ‘dark’ matter are Vera Rubin of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, DC, a pioneer in the search for the mysterious missing mass, and Tony Tyson of Bell Laboratories who travels to Chile and Hawaii to observe ‘gravitational arcs’, which are the visible ‘fingerprints’ of dark matter. Also featured is john Dobson, a self-proclaimed ‘sidewalk astronomer’ who reaches classes in telescope-making and travels to national parks around the country to host ‘star parties’ where he invites the public to gaze at the heavens and ask him questions about the cosmos. |
