HAWAIIAN HIGHWAY
Headlights sweep the road as a sleek convertible glides gracefully along a glorious stretch of serpentine highway. Below, surf pounds against rock.
A man drives. His female companion sits beside him. An aristocratic cello reclines comfortably in the back seat (in its case).
MAN
What do you mean you don't like it here? Everybody likes it here. It's paradise. .
WOMAN
It's Los Angeles with hula skirts.
The man and his lovely passenger are dressed in formal black. He is DR. DANIEL KULANI. She is VERONICA REDFIELD, a challenging smart woman -- perhaps 40, perhaps not. Veronica would be (and has been) elegant in a T-shirt. European cheekbones parenthesize an all American face. She is in Hawaii to appear as a guest soloist with the Oahu Symphony Orchestra.

DANIEL: As I remember, you were never too fond of it either.
VERONICA: Hated it. San Franciso is my town.
DANIEL: Funny, the only time I ever liked San Franciso was when I was there with you.
VERONICA: I think I'll be saying that about Oahu.
DANIEL: Nice recovery.  (he smiles at her) Very nice.
VERONICA: I'm so happy to see you again, Daniel.
After that last time, I thought. I was as dead as a doorknob in your book.
DANIEL: You were. And it's doornail.
VERONICA: Knob. The expression is 'dead as a doorknob'!
DANIEL: Doornail!
VERONICA: Nonsense, I know I'm right...
DANIEL: Trust me... it's...

Whatever he was going to say is cut short as A SPEEDING TRANS AM
races around a curve straight at them. It careens past their car, narrowly missing them.

VERONICA: (yells out the window)
Bastard. .. . He could've killed us.

DOWN THE ROAD
The Trans Am's brakes SCREECH. A long skid followed by a sickening CRASH as it hits and demolishes a VW bug.

Daniels car comes to a stop and he leaps out.
DANIEL: Call 911 - we're on Kam Highway near the City Center turnoff...
Veronica dials 911 on the car phone as Daniel starts toward the other car.
DANIEL There's flares in the trunk. My bag...get my bag.
The VW is totalled. A spider web design decorates the windshield where someone has crashed into it. Daniel pries open the door. TERESA SAUNDERS, about 26, wearing jeans and a shirt and sandals looks up, dazed and bleeding from a head wound.
DANIEL: I'm a doctor. Are you okay?
TERESA (looking around frantically)
My daughter. Where's my daughter?
Alice. ..
The passenger door hangs open.
TERESA: (screams) Alice.......

Daniel rushes to that side of the car. ALICE SAUNDERS, 6 years old, lies lifelessly on the pavement. She clings to a battered, clearly much held, stuffed dog. A goofy looking creature named Big Betty. .
DANIEL: Alice. Alice can you hear me?
No response. Daniel gently positions her head to establish an open airway and checks for breathing. places his second and third fingers on her neck checking for a pulse.
Veronica runs up, her high heels CLICKING on the pavement, and hands him his emergency bag. He begins administering CPR immediately (two breaths mouth to mouth followed by. five chest compressions)..
VERONICA: The ambulance is on way. What can I do?
DANIEL: Try and keep the traffic from jamming up...
VERONICA: What about the other driver?
DANIEL: Take a look.
TERESA: Oh, God, Alice....
Daniel continues CPR and listens to Alice's lungs with a stethoscope.

THE TRANS AM. The driver's door opens slowly. An incredibly drunk man, 32, JOHNNY KEOMALU A/K/A JOHNNY K. holds on to his car for dear life and tosses a nearly empty fifth of Glenlivet Scotch over the cliff.
Veronica arrives in time to witness the incriminating bottle being tossed over. Johnny turns, his mouth filled with slurred excuses.
JOHNNY K.: You see what happened?
VERONICA:  (pointedly: with an edge) Yeah. I saw it.
JOHNNY K.: VW, man... came from nowhere. Boom. Hit me square on. Coulda killed me.
VERONICA: Bull!
Johnny climbs back into his car, STARTS the MOTOR.
VERONICA: ' HEY... you're not going anywhere. You're staying right here.
She pulls the keys out of the ignition. Johnny K. grabs for her hair. She pulls free.
JOHNNY K.:  (yelling: threatening) Damnit I want those keys!
Johnny throws a punch at her but she's too fast and he's way too drunk. He stumbles 'toward her. She backs up. Veronica throws the keys over the cliff.
VERONICA:  You want them? There they are.
Daniel alternates between mouth to mouth and chest compressions. Teresa Saunders, close to shock, clings to her daughter's stuffed dog.
DANIEL: (to Teresa) The ambulance'll be here very soon.
Veronica lights and sets' flares along the road. . She begins directing a continual, slowing flow of traffic. A CAR comes to a stop as PASSENGERS crane their necks to get a better view.
DANIEL: (calling to her) Keep them moving... anyway you can.
Veronica nods and begins to POUND the fender of the car.
VERONICA: (yelling at the driver) Move it out! Not tomorrow! Now! Come on... move it!
The car pulls away obediently. She continues to direct traffic brusquely in her black dress, black shoes (with one heel broken off) and pearls.
Daniel continues administering CPR to Alice as he hears the reassuring SOUND of a DISTANT SIREN coming closer and closer.
