| Rodrigues:"How do you. feel, Ingeles?"
Blackthorne:"Rested". Rodrigues:"What do you think?" Blackthorne:"I think there'll be a storm". Rodrigues:"When?" Blackthorne:"Before the day is out". Rodrigues:"If this was your ship, what you do?" Blackthorne:"How far to the nearest land?" Rodrigues:"Three, maybe four hours. But to run for cover would cost me my bonus". Blackthorne:"Then go sleep. I'll take the watch for you, and if the wind changes, I'll wake you". Rodrigues:"All right, Ingeles. I think I'll trust you. God knows why". |

| Rodrigues comes into the cabin. He looks at
his sea chest, then takes out a key and opens the well-oiled lock.
There is a sealed packet in the sea chest and Rodrigues takes it out weighing it in his hand, staring at the Jesuit seals. Rodrigues:"Ah, priest what have you given me? God curse me and my lack of wits!" |

| Blackthorne:"There's a storm there, all right
-and this craft won't take much water. How was your sleep?"
Rodrigues:"Short -- but more than I would've if you weren't here. Can't be tai-fun". Blackthorne:"What?" Rodrigues:"Tai-fun. They're huge winds -- the worst storms you've ever seen. But we're not in tai-fun season". |

| Blackthorne:"Ship the oars and run before
the wind".
Come on now! All of you! Bail!" |

| Just as Blackthorne throws the oar, a huge
wave hits him from behind carrying him overboard. Yabu is already pulling
off his kimono. He climbs up onto the railing and leaps off. Blackthorne
is swimming as quickly as he can in the heavy sea.
He looks up and sees Yabu in the water ahead. Then. suddenly. Yabu vanishes under the water, and, after a moment, reappears, pullinq Rodriques head up by his hair. Holdinq Rodriques, Yabu starts swimming back toward the side of the Galley as Blackthorne swims up to help him. Blackthorne:"Thank you. Thank you for saving his life. Thank you. Thank you for your courage, you black-eyed son of a whore". |
