| Yabu is riding, a confident and arrogant expression
on his face, toward the top of the hill. Toranaga only glances at Yabu
-- gently stroking the falcon on his fist. Two Brown Samurai come forward
-- the same two who were on guard in front of Yabu's quarters at Osaka
Castle. Yabu stares at them -- his arrogance fading.
Toranaga:"Kyoo seppuku mooshi tsukeru". Yabu:"Kiden ni tanamoo, toshiyori- me". |

| Blackthorne is sitting on the rock, facing
out to sea. After a moment, he senses something behind him and turns. Alvita
and Buntaro are standing there.
Alvita:"I'm sorry. We did not mean to startle you". Blackthorne:"I was just thinking. It -- it doesn't matter". Alvita:"I will be leaving in the morning. I wanted to tell you before I go that I know what the loss of Mariko-san means to you". Blackthorne:"How could you know that"? Alvita:"She came to me -- the night you left Osaka. 1am afraid our destinies are interlocked, Pilot. Did Mariko-san ever tell you that? She told me". Blackthorne:"What else did she tell you"? Alvita:"She asked me to be your friend -- to protect you if I could. And I will try. You see, you will never leave here, Anjin-san. I told you that before and I say it again with no malice. Truly. You are a brave man, a fine adversary, one to respect, and I do. And there should be peace between us". Blackthorne:"How can there be"? Alvita:"Only if you and I sincerely desire it can that be possible". Blackthorne:"Where are you going"? Alvita:"First to Nagasaki. Then to wherever Lord Toranaga is, wherever the battle will be". Blackthorne:"They'll let you travel freely - - in the spirit of war"? Alvita:"Oh, yes. They need us - - whoever wins. Surely we can be reasonable men and make peace between us - - you and I. I ask it because of Mariko-san". Blackthorne:"Once we had a truce, because she wanted it. I'll offer you that. A truce - - but not a peace". Alvita:"A truce, then, in her memory". |

| Omi is hurrying toward them.
Omi:"Onegai desu, Anjin-san, hayaku kite kudasai. Yabu-dono ga oyobi desu". Blackthorne, Alvito and Omi are coming forward. Yabu sees them. Yabu hands the paper to Omi, who takes it and bows. |

| Alvito:"Lord Yabu says that he gives you his
sword to commemorate your arrival at Anjiro and as a thank you for the
pleasure - - the pleasure that boiling that barbarian gave him".
Blackthorne hesitates, then accepts the sword. Alvito:"He asks you to be his witness". Blackthorne:"Hai". |

| Alvito:"Lord Yabu says that now you will see
how a real Samurai dies. Thta is Lord Yabu's death poem. It goes: 'What
are clouds
But an excuse for the sky? What is death But an escape from life?' Yabu picks up his sword with both hands, holding it extended for a moment before driving it toward himself. Alvito turns his head away. Hiro-Matsu brings the sword suddenly flashing down. |

| Alvito:"Lord Toranaga is changing your fief.
He is giving you Anjiro. He has made you Samurai and hatamoto. He asks
why you are standing here so stupid and weak".
Blackthorne:"Sumimasen, Toranaga-sama". Alvito:"Before Mariko left Yedo, she gave this to Lord Toranaga. She said if you were still alive after Osaka you were to have it. Lord Toranaga asks if you are still alive". Blackthorne:"Hai. Ikite masu". Alvito turns and moves after Toranaga. Blackthorne stands there, staring down at the letter. |
