| Toranaga appears at the top of the hill, riding easily -- somehow newer and stronger. Toranaga looks down at the village, then spurs his horse on. |

| A large platform has been constructed in the clearing -- Blackthorne (his bandages gone now) Yabu, Naga, Kiri and Sazuko sitting there. Both Blackthorne's Samurai and all the Browns are standing in military formation at one side. |

| Toranaga moves toward Blackthorne - - looking
directly at him the first time. Toranaga passes his hand in front of Blackthorne's
eyes.
Toranaga:"Ninika mieruka"? Blackthorne:"Hai. Sukoshi". Fuzzy and blurred - - a figure in an orange robe is coming toward the platform. Alvito. |

| Blackthorne:"Alvito! Priest"!
Alvito:"Dameja, Anjin-san! Dameja". Blackthorne:"He burned my ship". Toranaga:"Tomare"! Blackthorne hesitates, then bows and starts walking away. |

| Blackthorne is sitting on a rock, facing out
to sea.
He spins around - - and Fujiko is standing there. Blackthorne doesn't know what Fujiko is saying. He starts walking, Fujiko following a few paces behind. |

| Alvito stands facing Toranaga. Blackthorne
is walking toward the platform - - guided by the light of the burning flares.
Alvito:"Lord Toranaga has questioned me about the burning of your ship. I told him that neither I nor anuone I know ordered or ossisted in the sabotage of your ship". Blackthorne:"He may believe you but I don't". Alvito:"Lord Toranaga requests that I swear a Holy Oath - - to you and to him - -that I am speaking the truth. He demands it -- or he says he withdraw all his support forever from me and my Church. Blackthorne:"Then swear, priest. Make your holiest oath". Alvito:"And then will you believe me? Will you"? Blackthorne:"Yes". Alvito:"I swear solemnly before God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, before all things sacred and holy, that I speak the truth. Toranaga:"Kasigi Omi. Hairi nasai". |

| Blackthorne and Alvito turn -- as ami comes
toward the platform, Kiku following several steps behind. ami glances at
Blackthorne, his eyes troubled. Both Omi and Kiku bow. Toranaga takes a
folded document out of his kimono. He holds it up. Blackthorne takes the
document -- staring at it, puzzled.
Alvito:"Lord Toranaga has just given you this lady's contract. She now belongs to you". Blackthorne:"Belongs"? Toranaga gets up and all bow. Toranaga bows back then he walks away. Alvito:"Lord Toranaga said that you may do with her as you wish". Blackthorne:"What do you mean belongs"? Alvito:"She is yours. You own this lady". Blackthorn holds the document toward Omi -- who just stares at it, bewildered. Blackthorne hands the document to Omi -- who holds it in both hands, still staring at it. |

| Then he bows low. Blackthorne bows back to him, then he turns and walks away. |
