| There is a stairway leading up -- and Blackthorne,
Mariko, Kiri, Sazuko and Sono start up, the Browns surrounding them.
Blackthorne, Mariko, Kiri, Sazuko and Sono reach the top -- and Kiri points, indicating the direction . They turn, the Browns moving with them. Ahead there is the great door to the Audience Room -- and they hurry towards it, Several Browns opening the door before they reach it. |

| Eut just as they start to go -- the 2nd Ninja
Leader and twenty men burst through a shoji. Blackthorne pulls his pistol
from beneath his sash and fires. The 2nd Ninja Leader is blasted back --
and Blackthorne grabs Mariko's hand, running with her, Kiri and Sazuko
already racing toward the far end of the room. Sono waits until
Blackthorne and Mariko have gone past, then she follows. |

| Blackthorne and Mariko are still a distance
from the open door -- as the Ninja come swiftly after them. Sana is between
Blackthorne and Mariko and the pursuing Ninja - - and now Sana turns,
pulling her knife from her obi and hurling herself, knife outstretched
at the first Ninja. The Ninja easily parries the blow and just flings her
aside, continuing his pursuit. Sana tries to pull herself up to attack again -- but another Ninja breaks her neck with his foot and rushes on. Blackthorne and Mariko reach the door -- and Blackthorne pushes Mariko through, then Kiri after her diving through the door and slaming it, just as the Ninja reach the wall. Blackthorne shoves the bolts closed -- Mariko, Kiri and Sazuko on their knees, gasping for breath. |

| Yabu waves his sword ferociously.
Blackthorne:"Where are we"? Mariko:"This - - this is Lord Toranaga's secret -- secret room". A sudden hammering at the door. To we akero samenaito buttobasuzo! Blackthorne:"What did he say"? Mariko:"He -- he said, to open the door or they would blow it open". Blackthorne:"Can they do that"? Mariko:"He says -- he says they only want you as a hostage. Everyone else will go free. No, it's a trick! Don't believe them! They don't want you -- they want me!" Mariko stands against the door. Blackthorne lunges for her -- but the explosion blows him aside as the door wrenches loose from its hinges and blasts into the room. |

| Blackthorne feels his way across the floor.
Mariko's body lies just
in front of him - - and with the first touch Blackthorne knows. His fingers search for her face. The strength leaves him and he collapses. |
