| Blackthorne bows to Mariko.
Blackthorne:"This day is beautiful because of thy presence". Mariko cautions him with her eyes as she returns his bow. Blackthorne:"Would you please tell the Lady Ochiba that in my land it is our custom to always give a lady a gift on her birthday. Even to a Queen". Mariko:"What are you -- "? Blackthorne:"Just tell her. Please". Lady Ochiba looks at Blackthorne, curiously -- and Blackthorne takes a pink camellia blossom from the pocket in his sleeve and places it in front of her. Lady Ochiba looks at the flower, surprised. Everyone in the huge room is watching, waiting to see how Lady Ochiba will react. |

| Lady Ochiba:"Watakushi wa jyooh dewa arimasen.
Oyotsugi-sama no selbe deari Taiko-denka no miboojin dearu dakedesu".
Mariko:"The Lady Ochiba says she is not a queen. Only the mother of the Heir and widow of the Lord Taiko". Lady Ochiba:"Shikashi tanjoobi wo mudaeru ichi fujin toshie mind-sarna no oyurushi wo ete, Anjin-san No okurimono wo Duke shitemo yoi kama". The entire room bursts into applause -- especially Yabu. |

| Ishido waves his hand-in a gesture of dismissal and Blackthorne moves back toward the crowd. |

| Mariko is still in front of the platform,
as Ishido turns to Lady Ochiba.
Ishido:"Toranaga-dono wa kana otoko we, keno ikoku-jin wo samurai ni surutowa shiryo ga taranakkata yoodesu". Mariko:"Shitsurei dewa gazaimasuga, shujin ni taishite okokorce chigai wo nasatte orimasu". Lady Ochiba:"Mariko-san, sonoyooni moosareru nowa gomottomo desu. Shikashi, onegai desukara koko dewa sore ijoo ossharanaide kudasai. Asu ni demo". Mariko:"Asu watakushi wa kokoni orimasen". Yabu is staring horrified. Blackthorne glances at him, then back at the platform -- knowing that something is suddenly very wrong, but not understanding what. Mariko bows, then she turns and walks away. Yabu is ashen -- as Mariko walks past, holding her head high. Blackthorne turns and watches -- as now Kiri and Sazuko step out of the crowd and walk with her toward the door. Yabu steps forward with Blackthorne and together they stride out after them -- Blackthorne and Yabu the only Samurai in the room wearing the brown Toranaga kimono. With a smile, Ishido watches them go -- then he turns to Lady Ochiba. Lady Ochiba doesn't smile. |

| Blackthorne:"What the hell is is going on"?
Mariko:"Please listen and do not ask questions for the moment. Lord Toranaga ordered me to escort Lady Kiritsubo and Lady Sazuko to meet him. My Master's order was that we leave tomorrow morning". Blackthorne:"Yes? But what happened"? Mariko:"Lord Ishido refuses his permission. He says that we cannot leave. Therefore he is preventing me from doing my duty to my liege lord and I cannot live with that shame -". Blackthorne:"No". Mariko:"-- and unless Lord Ishido changes his mind, I am bound by my honor to commit seppuku at sunset". Blackthorne:"No -- listen to me". Mariko:"Yes, but first I must calm this ill-tempered bastard. Is that how you say it"? Yabu:"Saa, sochi no orokasa wa itte yatta ka"? Mariko gestures toward the dais. She walks toward it and Blackthorne follows -- as Yoshinaka and his men position themselves by the door. Mariko:"Shall we go sit there, Anjin-san"? |

| Mariko sits on a cushion -- motioning ror
Blackthorne to sit opposite her, several feet away.
Blackthorne:"Can they hear us"? Mariko:"No, but keep thy voice sort and tell me that you love me". Blackthorne:"I love thee and cannot bear the thought of thy death". Mariko:"Only by living at the edge of death can you understand the indescribable joy of life. And at this moment, my heart is filled with joy and love for thee". Blackthorne:"Then why? Was this planned? Was your threat given on Lord Toranaga's orders". Mariko:"It was not a threat, but the order was his". Blackthorne:"Then he has betrayed you. You are only bait for his trap. You and I and Lord Yabu. We have all been sent here as a sacrifice". Mariko:"You are wrong. I am sorry". Blackthorne:"I tell thee that thou art beautiful and I love thee, but thou art a liar". Mariko:"No". Blackthorne:"Then tell me what he gains". Mariko:"Lord Ishida will be humbled". Blackthorne:"By your death? That is no trade". Mariko:"If I were alone with thee now I would kiss thee until thy cries for mercy filled the universe". Blackthorne:"I thank thee, Lady, but thou art there and I am here and there is the world between us". |

| Mariko:"My life is full because of thee".
Blackthorne:"Until sunset. Is there a way -- is there any way that I can stop thee". Mariko:"No, my love". Blackthorne:"Because of Lord Toranaga's orders"? Mariko:"Yes. But not his orders truly. It is also my wish. It is I who begged to be allowed to come here. Before God that is the truth". Blackthorne:"All this time -- you've been planning to die"? Mariko:"My life has never been my own. It has always belonged to my liege Lord. That is our law". Blackthorne:"Then it's a bad-law". Mariko:"Yes and no. Are we going to quarrel about things that cannot be changed"? Blackthorne:"They can be changed. I could change them". Mariko:"No, my love". Blackthorne:"Then death is thy aim". Mariko:"The life of my Master is my aim. And thy life. And truly, Madonna forgive me, or bless me for it, there are times when thy life is more important". Blackthorne:"Is there no escape"? Mariko:"Be patient. The sun has not yet set". Blackthorne:"I have no confidence in this sun. I have no confidence that Lord Toranaga knows what he is doing". Mariko:"My Master is very wise. I have told you". Blackthorne:"Yes -- you have told me. Too damn many times". Mariko:"No ill humor. The day is short". Blackthorne:"Yes -- you're right. What can I do to help thee"? Mariko:"Believe, my love -- believe there is a tomorrow". |
