The Samurai guard nods, then swings the gate open. 
Blackthorne looks at them and Mura gestures for him to enter.
There are eight men sprawled in the meticulous courtyard -- 
Vinck, Spillbergen, Roper, Pieterzoon, Croocq, Maetsukker, Salamon and Ginsel. 
They all turn as Blackthorne walks into the courtyard.

 

 
Vinck:"By the Lord Jesus, Pilot -- you're alive".
Pieterzoon:"Where's the ship? Is she safe?"
Blackthorne:"Anchored in the bay. Where are the others?"
Maetsukker:"All dead. The savages took them away.
We've got to get away from here. It's the land of Satan".
Blackthorne:"Hold your tongue, man. We'll do whatever we can.
Their chief is coming soon. Then we'll get everything settled."
Vinck:"You think he'll let us go?"
Pieterzoon:"Why shouldn't he? We've done them no harm. 
And look at the way they all smile and bow. 
They're no bloodthirsty heathens. Are they, Pilot? Are they?"

 

 
There is a procession entering the village. Kasigi Yabu in an ornate silk kimono, swords in his wide belt, is leading fifty samuari. Yabu is on horseback, the Samurai marching behind him. 
The villagers prostrate themselves on either side of the procession as it moves toward the town square.

Omi and Father Sebastio are standing there with a number of villagers as Yabu and his Samurai come into the square. 
Instantly, all the villagers throw themselves on the ground, faces in the dirt and Omi bends into a low bow, holding the position until Yabu rides up, dismounts and bows partway in response.

Yabu looks off at the ship in the bay beyond ans suddenly smiles.

 

 
With Mura in the lead, Blackthorne and the men are entering the square -- the Samurai right behind them. 
As they approach the platform, Mura suddenly drops to his knees
pressing his face in the dirt. Blackthorne stares at Yabu, then:
Blackthorne:"Bow to him".
Roper:"He is a heathen savage".

Blackthorne starts to bow then before any of the others can 
follow his example, the Samurai slam all of them onto their knees, 
pushing their heads into the dust. Blackthorne starts to struggle up, but the haft of a spear sends him reeling. The rest of the crew is set for an impulsive charge, but Blackthorne gestures at them.
Blackthorne:"Don't move".

Yabu:"Kaizokou ni dono yooni koko e kita ka tazuneyo".
Father Sebastio:"The daimyo, Kasigi Yabu, Lord of Izu, 
wants to know how you got here.
Blackthorne:"By Magellan's Pass".
Father Sebastio:"You're lying. Magellan's Pass is secret. 
You came by Africa and India".
Blackthorne:"The Pass was secret. A Portuguese sold us a rutter
a pilot's chart book from his ship".
Father Sebastio:"Liar".
Blackthorne:"Soon all our ships will know the way through to the Pacific".
Father Sebastio:"Heretic lies! But you'll tell the truth soon enough. They use torture here".

 

 

 
Father Sebastio:"Tono, kaizohu wa uso wo tsuie orimasu Majelan
kaikyo wo tootte kita to iimasu".
Yabu:"Omae wa yakuse. Sessha ga dare ga use wo tsuite iry ka wo kimeru".
Father Sebastio:"Hai, tono.

Father Sebastio:"Lord Kasigi Yabu wants to know what acts of 
piracy you have committed".
Blackthorne:"None! We are not pirates! 
We have come in peace with goods to trade".
Father Sebastio:"Another lie".
Blackthorne:"Give him my answer, damn you!"
Father Sebastio:"God curse you forever!"
Blackthorne:"Tell him we are not pirates, you Jesuit pig!"

Father Sebastio:"Tono, kono kaizoku wa yukoo ahinzen
wo mokuteki ni maitta to itte orimasu".
Yabu:"Sono kaizokusen wa nakami morotomo sashi osaeta".
Father Sebastio:"Kasigi Yabu says that your pirate ship is 
confiscated with all it contains".
Blackthorne:"You Papist liar! You lied to him!"

Yabu:"Kono yabanjintachi wo anagura e tsurete ike!

The Samurai move on command seizing Blackthorne and the other men.

 

 

 
Croocq:"What are we going to do, Pilot? Are they going to kill us?
Blackthorne:"No. They want us alive".
Roper:"We won't live long down here. Not like this".
Blackthorne:"No. Next time they lower the ladder, 
we'll have to take our chances".
Vinck:"Break out? With all those heathen soldiers up there? 
That's not much of a chance, Pilot".
Blackthorne:"It's all we've got".

Omi and Father Sebastio approach followed by Mura, carrying a large barrel.

Food and water!
Let us out of here!
Water! We need water!
Hey, you up here.
Do you hear?

Omi stares down into the cellar for a moment, then he gestures to Mura. Mura and the villager carry the barrel to the open hatch. 
It is filled with rotten fish offal ans seawater.
Omi nods and the contents of the barrel are poured into the hatch.

 

 
Vinck:"What are we going to do, Pilot?"
Blackthorne:"I don't know".
Maetsukker:"Why are you not to be picked?"
Blackthorne:"I don't know".
Roper:"How -- how are we to choose someone?"
Blackthorne:"We don't. We fight them".
Maetsukker:"Give them the Captain-General".
Roper:"How do we choose".
Blackthorne:"We don't, damn it".
Roper:"We'll draw lots. Straws one shorter than the rest. 
Agreed? God be praised".
