| Blackthorne is walking across the courtyard
- - toward Mariko.
Mariko:"Konnichi wa, Anjin-san". Blackthorne:"Konnichi wa, Mariko-san. I gladdens my heart to see thee". Mariko:"Lord Toranaga has sent for us". Blackthorne:"I know. When can I speak to thee"? Mariko:"That is very difficult now, Anjin-san". Blackthorne:"I was difficult before, but we --" Mariko:"I am sorry, Anjin-san. But we must go now". |

| Mariko:"My master asks if you saw your crew".
Blackthorne:"Hai, Tono. There are only five now. Two have died. I have heard that my ship is in beautiful condition. I would like to thank Lord Toranaga and ask when I may see her. Mariko:"My Master says that perhaps you may see your ship tomorrow. He will let you know. My Master has sent for his son Lord Sudara and his wife Lady Genjiko. He orders me to translate everything that is said. But you must not speak at all. |

| The door opens and Naga steps into the room.
Naga bows and steps back. Sudar enters with his wife Genjiko. They bow low. Sudara and Genjiko hurry to obey -- sitting directly in front of Toranaga. They glance at Blackthorne and Mariko, puzzled. Mariko:"Lord Sudara asks if he has offended my Master. My Master asks if treason is a reason to be offended. The Lady Genjiko says that whoever accused her husband is a liar. Toranaga looks at Mariko again. Mariko:"My Master asked if Lord Sudara's loyalty is without question -- and Lord Sudara replied that he has always been loyal. My Haster asks if Lord Sudara always obeys orders -- and Lord Sudara replied always. Lord Toranaga has ordered them to put their children to death. Now". Blackthorne stares at Toranaga with disbelief -- then he looks at Sudara and Genjiko. Genjiko nods to her husband and Sudara bows, then gets up and walks to the door. He goes out. Genjiko sits there, controlling herself -- as Toranaga sits calmly, waiting. After a moment he glances at Mariko. |

| Toranaga stares off. Blackthorne looks at
Genjiko, then at Mariko -- but they are also staring into space. After
another moment, the door opens and Sudara returns, shaken, his face pale.
Mariko:"Lord Sudara says that his children. are gone. He says that Lord Toranaga has already taken his children. My Master says that the children are in the next room. My Master needed to be sure of both Lord Sudara and Lady Genjiko. My Master says that foul times require foul tests". |

| Toranaga rings a small handbell -- and a shoji
slides open to admit a Nurse and three small Children. Sudara and Genjiko
just stare -- as the Children bow formally, then rush into Toranaga's embrace.
The Children hurry to Sudara and Genjiko. They all bow and, with the Nurse, walk to the door and go out. Toranaga waits until the door is closed. Mariko:"Lord Toranaga orders me to leave. You are to remain here, Anjin-san". |

| Blackthorne looks at the shoji, then back
at Toranaga. Toranaga gestures. Blackthorne gets up and walks to the shoji.
He slides it open -- and Alvito is standing there.
Alvito:"I understand you wanted to see me, Pilot". Blackthorne:"Yes - - but over there". Blackthorne indicates the dais -- and they walk toward Toranaga, who sits watching curiously. |

| Blackthorne:"I want your Holy oath, priest
-that what you hear now will never be repeated".
Alvito:"Or"? Blackthorne:"Or nothing shall be said". Alvito:"Perhaps that might be better. But you have my oath". Blackthorne:"Then let me hear it. Before God". Alvito:"I solemnly swear before God that what I hear now shall never pass my lips again". Blackthorne:"Nor shall you write it down nor convey it in any fashion. Swear to that". Alvito:"As you have just spoken, so do I swear. Lord Toranaga is anxious to hear your request". Blackthorne:"I humbly ask that he grant a divorce to the Lady Tocla. I humbly ask for her hand in marriage". Alvito:"You can't be serious". Blackthorne:"It should not offend your church, priest. Her marriage was Shinto, not Catholic. Ask for me. In my words. |

| Alvita looks at him for a moment, then turns
to Toranaga.
Toranaga stares at Blackthorne. Alvita:"Does Mariko-san agree to this"? Blackthorne:"No. It is my secret. I have never spoken a word to her about this. But it is my wish". |

| Alvita:"That is a very presumptuous request
and Lord Toranaga forbids you to ever speak of it again. That is all".
Blackthorne bows very low. |
