Tribute to Richard Chamberlain

Omi walks through the small, beautiful garden toward the house.
A shoji slides open and Gyoko bows to him.

Gyoko bows again and hurries into the house. ami stands there --
and after a moment Blackthorne and Kiku come out.
Omi gestures toward the gate -- then he and Blackthorne
walk toward it, Kiku following a few steps behind.
Kiku bows to Blackthorne -- and in that moment Blackthorne
sees Omi looking at him angrily. Kiku bows after them.

Mariko:"My Master says that you are to leave with him
tomorrow at dawn".
Blackthorne:"For Yedo?"
Mariko:"First you will go to Yokose. Then to Yedo".
Blackthorne:"I thought Lord Toranaga wanted me to prepare
my ship for war. Why is he sending me to Yokose?"
Mariko:"Yokose is between here and Mishima.
It is on the way to Yedo. Lord Toranaga will be stopping there".

Mariko:"My Master wishes you to write down your genealogy --
everything about your family".
Blackthorne:"Why?"
Mariko:"All Samurai have to have their births and deaths
recorded, Anjin-san, as well as their fiefs and land grants.
How else can a liege lord keep everything balanced?
Everything must be officially recorded. How else can you be
sure where and to whom you belong?"
Blackthorne:"I would like to thank Lord Toranaga for his
favor and for his many gifts. I would ask him to honor
be by choosing my two hundred retainers.
His guidance in this would be worth anything".

Mariko:"Lord Toranaga asks, is it worth a thousand koku?"
Blackthorne:"Hai".
Mariko:"My Master says that you are generous and he
accepts your offer. One thousand koku.
Your men will be waiting for you in Yedo".
Blackthorne:"Domo, Toranaga-sama".

Blackthorne looks around as they ride.
Blackthorne:"I've never seen countryside like this in Europe -"
Mariko:"Yes, it is beautiful".
Blackthorne:"What do we do in Yokose?"
Mariko:"I do not know, Anjin-san Lord Toranaga is meeting
his half-brother there, Lord Zataki, Lord of Shinao".

Blackthorne is helping Mariko off her horse - - as Buntaro
walks up to them.
Buntaro:"Konnichi wa, Mariko-san. Konnichi wa, Anjin-san".
Blackthorne:"Konnichi wa, Buntaro-san".
Mariko:"My husband asks you to excuse him, but he must
speak to me privately".
Blackthorne:"Dozo".

Zataki's cortege is approaching -- heralds leading the way carrying banners bedecked with the all-powerful cipher of the Regents.
Then a rich palanquin with precise Samurai bearers, followed by a company of guards. Alvita is walking twenty paces behind the cortege, his ten Acolytes following in two rows.
Blackthorne is standing a distance away -- watching the
ceremony on the dais.
