Tribute to Richard Chamberlain

Blackthorne and Mariko are walking down the street, with an escort of ten Samurai, torchbearers leading the way.
Blackthorne:"....part of my reward? What part of my reward".
Mariko:"You will see. Lord Toranaga has ordered it".
Blackthorne:"Ordered a woman for me?"
Mariko:"Yes. Kiku-san.
And for tonight, you must be very Japanese.
Blackthorne:"What do I have to do?"
Mariko:"You must forget what you have to do and
remember that this night is only for your pleasure".

The room is exquisite -- the wood burnished, the tatami beautifully woven.
Mariko:"I have always wanted to see the inside of one of these houses. Even in a small village -- just look at it. Everything is beautiful.
Blackthorne:"You are beautiful".
Mariko:"And you. I am so proud of you -proud to be with you here. Tonight there are no cares -- tonight there is only magic for you".
Blackthorne:"Thou art magic for me. You said there was another
reason you wanted me here. What was that?"
Mariko:"It is an ancient custom we have, Anjin-san --
when a lady who belongs to someone else cares for another man,
and wishes to give him something of consequence that it
is forbidden to give, then she will arrange for another to take her
place -- a gift -- the most perfect gift that she can find.
Tonight, Anjin-san -- tonight is a magic night".

The shoji slides open and Kiku is standing there wearing
a golden komono, a green one under it. Both Blackthorne and Mariko are struck by her beauty.  Kiku smiles and bows, then she comes gracefully into the room, sliding the shoji closed.
Blackthorne:"Tell her -- tell her I remember the first time we met".
Mariko:"The first time?"
Blackthorne:"Just tell her".
Mariko:"Kiku-san is honored that you remember.
She says you are very different now than you were then".

Kiku pours sake -- serving them.
Mariko:"Kiku-san asks if you would like her to play or dance for you.
Blackthorne:"What is your preference?"
Mariko:"This Lady is here for your pleasure, Samurai, not mine".
Blackthorne:"And you? Are you also here for my pleasure?"
Mariko:"Yes. In a way -- in a very private way".
Blackthorne:"Then please ask her to play".

Kiku claps her hands gently and the shoji slides open and a maid
brings in a long, stringed samisen. The maid bows and goes out,
closing the shoji -- as Kiku kneels at the samisen, her fingers strumming the chords expertly.

Kiku pushes the samisen aside, then moves to kneel behind
Blackthorne -- massaging his neck, her fingers quickly
finding the pleasure points.

Blackthorne:"Let us leave together".
Mariko:"I beg thee stay, For thy honor and hers.
And mine, Anjin-san".
Blackthorne:"I do not desire thy gift. I desire thee".
Mariko:"I am thine, Anjin-san. Please stay and
know that tonight I am thine".
Blackthorne:"Then be with me".
Mariko:"I am".
Blackthorne:"Speak no more. I would put my fingers to thy lips
to silence thee, but I cannot".

Blackthorne looks into her eyes for a moment -- then Mariko moves to the shoji. She slides it open and goes out -- the shoji sliding closed after her. Kiku ends her massage gently. Blackthorne turns toward her -and Kiku smiles.

The room is dimly lighted now, as Blackthorne lies on a futon --
Kiku kneeling in front of him. Then, slowly and gracefully,
she removes her kimono, letting it fall into a golden ring around her.
