Tribute to Richard Chamberlain

The house is a collapsed, smoldering ruin -- the servants putting out the last of the flames, trying to salvage what they can,
several of them hurt and bandaged.
Blackthorne comes through the gate and stops -shocked.
Then he looks around anxiously.
Fujiko is lying on a salvaged futon, a doctor carefully wrapping
her legs in wet bandages. Blackthorne moves toward her,
kneeling next to the futon.

Blackthorne points to her legs and the Doctor pulls back
Fujiko's kimono -- reveling that both legs are badly burned.
Four bearers carrying a palanquin through the gate -
and the Doctor motions to them. At the Doctor's signal,
the beareys lift the palanquin and follow the Doctor to the gate.
Blackthorne watches them go out.

There are flares burning all around the perimeter of the clearing -- a tent erected in the center, Naga and twenty Brown Samurai
surrounding it. The rest of the clearing is empty and silent.
Toranaga and Mariko are sitting on cushions -- Toranaga dressed now in full military fashion. They look up as Blackthorne enters and bows.
Blackthorne:"Konbanwa, Toranaga-sama".
Toranaga:"Konbanwa, Anjin-san".
Mariko:"Lord Toranaga wishes to know how long will it take for your ship to be ready for war".
Blackthorne:"On whom do I war, Mariko-san?"

Blackthorne sits between Yabu and Buntaro and Naga turns
and walks back toward the tent. Blackthorne looks at Yabu,
then at Buntaro and Omi -- but they are all staring straight ahead.
Even with all the Samurai, it is completely silent -- then, suddenly,
there is the thunderous sound of a drum.

Toranaga raises his hand and it is instantly silent again.
he points at Blackthorne.
Mariko:"Lord Toranaga says, 'Today I was almost killed.
Today the Anjin-san pulled me out of the earth.
That is the second, perhaps even the third time that he has
saved my life. My life is nothing against the future
of my clan, and who is to say whether I would have lived
or died without his help. But though it is Bushido that vassals
should never expect a reward for any service, it is the duty of
a liege lord to grant favors from time to time.
The Anjin-san is given a fief near the fishing village of
Yokohama to the south of Yedo worth two thousand koku,
the right to recruit two hundred samurai retainers with full
battle equipment, ten horses and twenty kimono's".

Naga comes out of the tent carrying a silk-covered package
toward Toranaga. Toranaga looks at Blackthorne.
Mariko:"To be a samurai is the highest honor to which a man can aspire. To live like a samurai is the most honorable life a man can live. To accept the duty of a samurai is the greatest oath a man can make. The obedience of a samurai is without question.

Toranaga throws off the silk caver of the package Naga is holding
revealing two matching swords, beautifully crafted, one long,
one short. Toranaga takes them.
Mariko:"Lord Toranaga presents these swords to you in
return for the one you gave him. They were made by the master
craftsman Yori-ya. He says, remember the sword is the soul
of the Samurai. If he forgets it or loses it, he will never be excused".
Toranaga holds the swords out to Blackthorne.
Blackthorne takes them, bows, then places the swords
correctly in his sash.

Mariko:"Because from this moment on, you, Anjin-san,
you are now Samurai".
The sound of the drums explodes the stillness of the square.
