Mariko:"Is something wrong?".
Blackthorne:"Nothing is wrong. At this moment,
nothing in the whole world".
Mariko:"Then shall we begin our lesson?"
Blackthorne:"Thou art beautiful and I love thee".
Mariko:"Love is a Christian word".
Blackthorne:"Thou art beautiful and Christian and I love thee".
Mariko:"I will take that as a compliment".
Blackthorne:"Take it as I meant it.
Mariko:"You seem very happy today.
Blackthorne:"You know why.
Mariko:"I know nothing, Anjin-san.
Blackthorne:"Nothing.
Mariko:"Why have you lost your smile?
Blackthorne:"Because I don't understand.
Mariko:"There is nothing to understand.
Blackthorne:"What passed in the night then?
Mariko:"I passed your door in the night --
when my maid was with you.
Blackthorne:"What!

Mariko:"Your consort and I thought she would be a pleasing
gift for you. And she pleased you, did she not".
Blackthorne:"It was no maid".
Mariko:"It was. We annointed her with my perfume
and instructed her not to speak -- only to touch".
Blackthorne:"A joke concerning things of great importance
is sometimes without humor".
Mariko:"Things of great import will always be treated with
great import. But a maid in the night with a man is without import.
It is a gift from her to him and, sometimes, from him to her.
Nothing more".
Blackthorne:"Never?"
Mariko:"Only when the woman and the man join together
against the law. If a woman who belonged to a man,
as I belong to Lord Buntaro -- if she joined with another man,
that would be a serious crime. A crime punishable by death.

Blackthorne:"Forgive me. I am a foo1".
Mariko:"There is no need to apologize, Anjin-san".
Blackthorne:"How do I tell this 'maid' that I love her?"
Mariko:"That would not be seemly, Anjin-san.
It is our custom to make life simple. We admire simplicitym, so men and women can take pillowing for what it is".

Blackthonre is on the veranda steps, oiling and cleaning his pistol.
The gardener approaches with a timid smile.
Blackthorne holds the pistol out to him.
Blackthorne:"Go on. You can hold it".
The gardener shakes his head.
Blackthorne puts the pistol in the gardener's hands.
The gardener stares at it with a happy grin  - - then he
bows and hands the pistol back to Blackthorne and bows again.

Both sides of the road are crowded with villagers - all bowing low -- as Toranaga and Buntaro ride at the head of a large contingent of Samurai, all of them dusty and sweat-soiled.
Mariko and Fujiko are standing in the garden.
The Gardener opens the gate and bows low - as Buntaro strides into the garden, his great bow over his shoulder, several Samurai following him.
Mariko:"Tono, ogenki soode nani yori desu".
Buntaro stares at her coolly.
Buntaro turns -- as Blackthorne comes out of the house,
onto the veranda. He stares at Buntaro -- and Buntaro stares back. Mariko looks from Buntaro to Blackthorne, both of them standing there, eyes locked.

Mariko:"Please bow, Anjin-san. ( then) Please".
Blackthorne hesitates, then he bows.
Butaro returns the bow but not quite as low.
