Tribute to Richard Chamberlain

Mariko:"Fujiko-san. Fujiko-san hopes the sake pleases you.
I am honored to tell you that Usagi Fujiko is given to you as consort".
Blackthorne:"What?"
Mariko:"Lord Toranaga asked her if she would be your consort
and she said she would be honored and she has agreed".
Blackthorne:"But I haven't agreed. I don't want her".
Mariko:"But, Anjin-san, you cannot refuse. That would be a
terrible insult to Lord Toranaga, to her, to everuone".
Blackthorne:"I said I don't want her".

Blackthorne:"So I'm trapped again. Either I take her or I will die.
If I don't learn your language then a whole village will be butchered. If I don't do whatever you want, some innocent is always killed. There's no way out, is there?"
Mariko:"There is a very easy solution. You do not have to endure the unendurable.
Blackthorne:"How? Kill myself?"
Mariko:"There are many ways of dying honorably without suicide. You have a pistol. Kill Lord Yabu or even attempt to kill him and you will quickly be in heaven or hell".
Blackthorne:"My God -".
Mariko:"Anjin-san, forget the village. A thousand million things
can happen before those six months occur. A tidal wave or an earthquake, or you get your ship and sail away, or Yabu dies, or we all die, or who knows? You must leave karma to karma.
Today you are here and nothing you can do will change that.
Tomorrow does not exist. There is only now.
There is only this moment. Nothing else. Nothing.

Blackthorne, Mariko and Fuiiko are still on the veranda --
as Omi strides toward them, the Samurai positioning themselves
in the qarden.
Mariko:"Omi-san has been ordered to escort you to
Lord Yabu's house. I am sorry, Anjin-san, but ami-san orders
you to give him your pistol".
Blackthorne:"Tell him to go to hell!"
Mariko:"I do not dare. You cannot go into a Lord's presence
with weapons. It is our custom".
Blackthorne:"Tell him that this pistol is a gift from Lord Toranaga".
Mariko:"He already knows that, Anjin-san".
Mariko:"Please, Anjin-san. This is very dangerous. You must see
Lord Yabu and you may not take your pistol".
Blackthorne:"Tell him I will blow his head off if he comes near me".
Mariko:"You can leave the pistol here. Or give it to Fujiko-san".
Blackthorne:"What can she do? He'll take it from her".
Mariko:"Listen to me. Fujiko-san is your consort. If you order it,
she will protect the pistol with her life. That is her duty. She is a samurai".
Blackthorne:"Tell Omi-san I don't like orders.
I am Lord Toranaga's guest. I am Lord Yabu's guest.
You 'ask' guests to do things. You don't order them".
Mariko:"Omi-san says, 'I, Kasigi Omi, I would ask for your pistol, but Lord Kasigi Yabu orders me to order you to give me your weapon. (then)I am sorry, Anjin-san -- but you must do something". Blackthorne glances at Omi, then he lowers the pistol and hands it to Fujiko.

Mariko:"Your consort rightly points out that a hatamoto is obliged to wear the two swords of a samurai. It is your duty to do so. It would not be correct for you to go to Lord Yabu without swords. It would be impolite. She asked if you would consider using these, unworthy as they are, until you buy your own.
0mi is walking angrily back toward the veranda
Mariko:"Omi-san said that you could not wear swords in the presence of Lord Yabu -- but your consort reminded him that if is both the duty and the privilege of a hatamoto to wear swords in the presence of a lord. Blackthorne takes the swords from her and, one at a time, sticks them in his belt -- exactly as Omi is wearing his. Blackthorne turns and stares at Omi.
Blackthorne keeps staring and finally Omi looks away - - and bows.

Blackthorne, Mariko and Omi are seated on cushions -as Yabu talks, very agitated.
Blackthorne:"What did he say".
Mariko:"Lord Yabu received a message from Osaka informing him that Lord Ito Teruzumi has been chosen for the Council of Regents. He has already taken his place and Lord Ishido is the new President. Lord Yabu says that they are going to impeach' Lord Toranaga in twenty days".
Blackthorne:"Then Lord Toranaga was wrong.
They did agree on someone".
Mariko:"I have told you, Anjin-san, Lord Toranaga is very wise.
He is seldom wrong. Lord Yabu asks if you have ever been
part of any battles on land".
Blackthorne:"Yes. In Holland and once in France".
Mariko:"Lord Yabu says excellent. As a favor he would like
to know European strategy.
He would like to know how battles are fought in your lands".
Blackthorne:"I will be happy to grant Lord Yabu's favor.
But I would also ask a favor. I would ask Lord Yabu as a humble
favor to rescind his decree about the village".
Mariko:"Lord Yabu says the village means nothing.
But his decree cannot be changed".

Blackthorne:"Please thank Yabu-san but tell him I cannot live with this shame. I cannot live with the shame of having the village on my conscience. I am dishonored. I cannot endure this. It is against my Christian belief. I will have to commit suicide at once".
Mariko:"Suicide?"
Blackthorne:"Yes. That is what I have decided to do".
Mariko:"Lord Yabu asks how you would commit suicide".

Mariko:"Anjin-san - - Lord Yabu says the decree will not be changed. I'm - - I am very sorry".
