| Omi and Mura are standing on the foreshore
near the jetty.
Behind them, in kneeling rows, is the entire population of the village --men, women and children. A large contingent of Samurai is standing in a tight military formation, totally filling one side of the square, their banners waving in the slight breeze, upright spears glinting in the sun. |

| Blackthorne:"The Erasmus -- where's my ship?"
Mariko:"Lord Toranaga had it moved to Yedo for safety". Blackthorne:"Yedo. What about my crew?" Mariko:"They are under Lord Toranaga's protection -- in Yedo". |

| Omi and Mura are bowing low -.- as Toranaga
walks up.
He looks at Omi, Yabu hurrying up behind him. Blackthorne:"What's he doing?" Mariko:"My Master is going to inspect Lord Yabu's troops. We are to wait for him in the square. Blackthorne:"And then what?" Mariko:"My master will let us know". |

| Yabu cannot hold back the smile. Mariko and
Toranaga are standing at the foot of the gangway -- Toranaga talking to
her emphatically. Then Toranaga takes a folded paper from his kimono and
hands it to her before he turns toward the galley.
A Brown Samurai starts down the gangway -- carrying a box. Yabu and Omi are watching as well -- as Toranaga and Mariko walk back toward them, followed by the Brown Samurai. Toranaga signals to the Brown Samurai -- who steps forward, holding out the box. Mariko:"Lord Toranaga says that this is his gift for you". Blackthorne:"Domo, Toranaga-sama. What is it?" Toranaga turns and walks back to the gangway. |

| The galley is moving away from the jetty.
Blackthorne:"When is he coming back?" Mariko:"I don't know. You expressed an interest in learning our language. That is what my Master wishes you to do. Blackthorne:"Why here? Why not in Yedo?" Mariko:"I am sorry, Anjin-san -- but I do not know. I can only tell you that Lord Toranaga is very wise. Whatever his reason, it must be very good. ( then) Aren't you going to open your present? Blackthorne starts to open the box -- and instantly Yabu's eyes are there, watching. Blackthorne reaches into the box -- bringing out a pistol, a sack of powder and a sack of shot. Yabu's happiness vanishes in an instant. |

| Mariko:"Lord Yabu says that you are welcome
in this village.
This paper is under Lord Toranaga's seal, Anjin-san. You are to keep it. He has given you a rare honor. Lord Toranaga has made you a hatamoto. This is the position of special retainer on his personal staff. You have his absolute protection,Anjin-san. Lord Yabu, of course, acknowledges this. I will explain later the privileges, but Lord Toranaga has given you a salary of twenty koku a month. That is about - Yabu points -- and Blackthorne looks. |

| Mariko:"Lord Yabu says that he hopes you will
be content.
Everything will be done to make your stay comfortable. That house is to be provided for you. Lord Yabu says that you will please learn Japanese as quickly as possible. And tonight you will go to his house. The village is responsible, Anjin-san. If you have not learned to speak our language satisfactorily within six months, the village will be burnt - but before that, every man, woman and child will be crucified". Blackthorne:"Crucified -- ? But, good God, he can't do that". Mariko:"Yes, Anjin-san, he can -- and there is nothing anyone can do to stop him". Blackthorne:"There has to be some way". Mariko:"In Japan, Anjin-san, there are only Japanese ways". |
