Tribute to Richard Chamberlain

Toranaga signals to the four Brown Samurai and begins
speaking to them -- as Mariko turns to Blackthorne.
Mariko:"Lord Toranaga says that you and I -- with the uniformed
Samurai -will go to the galley and tell them that we have
been attacked by bandits. Back in the street where we
were attacked. I will tell them that we were sent ahead
to get help and that the battle is still going on.
I will tell them that Kiritsubo-san is in great danger".
Blackthorne:"Please tell Lord Toranaga that his plan is
not good. There is no need for you to go.
I can go with the Samurai without you".
Mariko:"I cannot do that, Anjin-san. That is not what our
Master has ordered. Any plan he makes is bound to be very wise.
Blackthorne:"Mariko-san, I ask you to say here, please".
Mariko:"That is not possible".
Blackthorne:"Then I want a knife. Better, give me two".
Mariko:"We are to go now. Are you ready?"
Blackthorne:"It's a rotten plan -- but I'm ready".

Mariko is talking and pointing feverishly to the Gray
Officer in charge -- her words lost in the general babble.
Mariko:"Does the ship seem all right to you?"
Blackthorne:"She's floating".
Mariko starts toward the gangway.
Blackthorne and the Brown Samurai follow after her.

Thirty of Toranaga's disguised Samurai come charging out of the shadows -- heading for the galley's gangway, one of the Brown Samurai points toward shore.
The Grays turn to look -- and the Brown Samurai turn on them.
Three Grays die quickly, but the fourth is faster than the Brown --
dodging the Brown's sword and drawing his own for one fatal thrust.
Ten more Grays come rushing out of the lower cabin throwing
themselves into battle with the three Browns on the deck,
two of them charging toward Blackthorne.
Blackthorne stands his ground over Mariko -- pulling
the knife from his sash and throwing it hard, the knife catches one of the charging Grays in the chest and he falls -- but the other Gray rushes on, his sword held high. Blackthorne pulls the second knife from his sleeve -- and at that moment Mariko comes alive,
throwing herself at the unsuspecting Gray's legs, crashing
him to the deck. Then Mariko is on her feet -- scrambling to the
dead Gray and picking up his sword to face the remaining Gray.
The Gray has his sword raised for a powerful, final blow -- when Blackthorne's knife catches him squarely in the back. The Gray falls at Mariko's feet. Mariko still holds the sword in her hand.
Blackthorne is moving toward her Mariko is looking at the wharf.

Toranaga appears from the shadows and begins walking
slowly, alone, toward the gangway. Now, suddenly, there is a sudden flash in the sky and the echoing of alarm bells. Toranaga doesn't even glance back -- continuing his leisurely stroll.
When Blackthorne looks back, Mariko is staring at him.
Mariko:"The alarm from the castle. Lord Ishido knows".
Blackthorne:"Look at him -- as if he's got all the time in the world".
Mariko:"I thank you for my life, Anjin-san".
Blackthorne:"And I thank thee for mine".

Toranaga reaches the galley's gangway -- and starts up toward the deck. The crew, rowers and Samurai -- everyone on board -bows low. Toranaga- motions to Yabu -- and instantly Yabu takes command. Blackthorne looks out to sea as the galley turns into the bay.

Rodrigues is at the helm -- Alvito and Dell'Aqua standing with
Ferriera on the quarterdeck, all of them looking off toward
the approaching galley.
Ferriera:"Any closer and I'll blow her out of the water".
Father Dell'Aqua:"No".
Ferriera:"We risk nothing, Eminence, and gain everything.
We pretend that we didn't know Toranaga was aboard.
We thought the bandits-- bandits led by the pirate heretic --
were going to attack us".
Father Dell'Aqua:"No".
