Tribute to Richard Chamberlain

Mariko:"You are a brave man, Anjin-san.
I thank you for saving him".
Blackthorne:"Then tell me why Lord Toranaga
didn't leave the Castle openly. Why the masquerade?
Mariko:"No one leaves Osaka Castle without Lord Ishiso's
permission -- not even my Master.
Blackthorne:"Did you know that he --?"
Mariko:"No -- not until Lord Ishido pulled the curtain open.
But you saw earlier".
Blackthorne:"Yes, and I saw what you did -putting yourself
between Ishido's arrow and my back.
Your bravery was greater than mine, Lady".
Mariko:"No. Please, you must not say that.
Blackthorne:"But that is the truth.
How do you say 'truth' in Japanese?"
Mariko:"Honto."
Blackthorne:"Then it is Honto that you are braver than I.
You are brave and you are beautiful".

Yabu and the lead Samurai reach the edge of the wooded
area and Yabu looks ahead warily.
It is a street of rich houses, colored lanterns hang
ing over the gateposts, lights from inside glowing
through the shoji screens -- but the street is empty.

The procession starts down the street the two palanquins
in the center. It is not until the whole procession is in the
middle of the street that the arrows come out of the night --
impaling several Samurai and two of the palanquin bearers.
The remaining bearers drop the palanquins and take heels in terror.
With an astonishingly swift and fluid movement, Buntaro launches
three arrows. Blackthorne stares at Buntaro for a moment,
then looks down the street. The three attackers are brought:
down by Buntaro' s arrows -- as several of Yabu's Samurai
rush toward them, swords held high.

Toranaga looks around calmly, surveying their position
-- as now Yabu comes toward them.

Mariko:"Lord Toranaga wishes us to go with him and Lord Yabu.
My husband will continue with others on a separate route.

Blackthorne and Mariko move off with Toranaga, Yabu and the four Samurai - - heading toward the harbor.

There are a number of ramshackle buildings --and Toranaga
leads the others to a battered gate. There is a fish etched into
the timbers and Toranaga knocks twice, then three times,
then twice again. Instantly the door opens and a SAMURAI
in motley rags bows to Toranaga. In a few moments,
there are fifty elite Samurai dressed in an odd assortment
of rags in the alley, all of them well armed and disciplined.

Hiro-Matsu is walking down the corridor with an escort
of six Brown Samurai -- toward a door guarded by
twenty Grays. The Gray Officer in charge steps forward.
Hiro-Matsu waits -- and the Gray Officer opens the guarded door, stepping inside. Then, after a moment, the door opens wide and Ishido appears in the doorway, looking at Hiro-Matsu angrily. Hiro-Matsu takes a folded piece of paper from inside his kimono. Ishido takes the paper and unfolds it, hisexpression changing to absolute fury as he reads the passage.

Blackthorne is standing in the shadows of the warehouse --
watching the wharf -- as Toranaga speaks to Mariko and Yabu a distance behind him. The fifty motley Samurai are standing motionlessly against the warehouse wall. Blackthorne glances back at them -as Mariko comes toward them.

Blackthorne:"The odds are not exactly in our favor".
Mariko:"Lord Toranaga will find a way.
He has asked me to explain to you what he has done.
My master has resigned from the Council of Regents.
Now there are only four of them and five are required to make
any decision.
Blackthorne:"Then Ishido will appoint another Regent".
Mariko:"No. He cannot. The four will have to agree on the
choice -- and they will argue".
Blackthorne:"But sooner or later they'll decide".
Mariko:"By then my Master will be safe".
Blackthorne:"With luck".
