Father Alvito:"Why did you smash the priest's cross
when you first arrived in Japan?"

Blackthorne is surprised by the question and as he answers,
Mariko continues to speak softly into Toranaga's ear.

Blackthorne:"I wanted to show the Lord Yabusama that the Jesuit, Father Sebastio the only interpreter there, that he was my enemy, that he wasn't to be trusted. At least, in my opinion because I wasn't sure that he would translate accurately. And he accused us of being pirates. We are not pirates. We come in peace".
Toranaga:"Sochi no sentai wa iku soo no fune ni yooe naru noja?"
Father Alvito:"How many ships are in your fleet?"
Blackthorne:"Five".
Father Alvito:"And you were the senior pilot?"
Blackthorne:"Yes".
Father Alvito:"Where are the other ships?"
Blackthorne:"Out to sea. We were split up in a storm and scattered.
Where exactly I don't know, Sire".
Father Alvito:"If you are English, why were you leading Dutch ships?"
Blackthorne:"That is not unusual. Holland and England are allies
and I was glad of the opportunity to sail into these waters.
No English ships were planning to come so far.
This was a chance to circumnavigate. We came to Japan to trade.

The great door shivers open and Naga steps into the room.
He bows to Toranaga.

Father Alvito:"Captain-Pilot, you are to follow those men".
Blackthorne:"Where am I going?"
Father Alvito:"You are to be detained".
Blackthorne:"For how long?"
Father Alvito:"I don't know, my son. Until Lord Toranaga decides".
Naga:"Koi!"

Blackthorne just stands there for another moment, staring at Mariko. Then, she bows politely and walks past.
Naga nudges Blackthorne again -- and they move on down the corridor.

This is the edge of the city. There is a complex contained behind high stone walls -- a roped-off area of beaten earth just outside the walls, next to the river. There are five crosses rising above the small crowd with four naked men and one woman bound to the crosspieces by their wrists and ankles. A group of Executioners wi th long lances is moving through the small surrounding crowd
about to perform their duty.
