The Samurai hurry Blackthorne down the corridor -to a panel/door at the far end. One of the Samurai slides the panel open, then motions for Blackthorne to go in. Blackthorne looks through the open panel. YOSHI TORANAGA, Lord of the Kwanto, sits on a single cushion, dressed in a simple brown kimono -- but his swords are the best in the world. He is repairing the broken wing feather of a hooded falcon -- working as delicately as an ivory carver.

Blackthorne takes a deep breath, then he sits crosslegged -- staring at Toranaga.
Now, slowly, Toranaga looks up -- at Blackthorne.

Father Alvita appears from around the dais -- wearing a flowing kimono, rosary and carved golden cross hanging from his belt.

Father Alvita:"My name is Martin Alvita of the Society of Jesus,
Captain-Pilot. Lord Toranaga has asked me to interpret for him.
Blackthorne:"First tell him that werre enemies".
Father Alvita:"All in good time. Vasco Rodrigues has told me of your bravery.
Blackthorne:"Tell Lord Toranaga that I do not trust you to translate what I say".
Father Alvita:"You may tell him yourself. The Japanese word for enemy is 'teki' If you point to me and say that word, Lord Toranaga will understand clearly what you mean".
Blackthorne:"Teki".

Father Alvita:"Since you have objected to my translating your words, Lord Toranaga will have the Lady Toda explain your reponses".
Blackthorne:"I can have no objection to that.
But since the lady is to convey my words I would like to be introduced".
Father Alvita:"Lord Toranaga has agreed. What is your full name?
Blackthorne:"Pilot-Major John Blackthorne".
Father Alvita:"Pilot-Major John Blackthorne, may I present
the lady Toda Buntaro Mariko".
Blackthorne:"I am honored, Lady".
